North Wales Coast Bikeathon 2011

NORTH WALES COAST BIKEATHON GRAND TOTAL RAISED: £13,310.48!!!

From Terry Hickmott, Branch Treasurer

I would like to say a big thank you to Loz and all entrants for taking part in the North Wales Coast Bikeathon.

Last years 50k bike ride was a great success and working with Loz we were able to put the first  official North Wales Coast Bikeathon into action.

We would like to thank Kevin Roberts at Snackamix for supporting our branch and donating Kellogg's cereal bars and Radnor Hills bottled water for all riders and their support was invaluable. www.snackmix.co.uk

Cheshireoaks Cycles also helped by supplying parts for broken down cyclists on route.

It was day to remember for my family as besides the bikeathon, our daughter gave birth to our first granddaughter Poppy Rose. Little did we know when the date was picked last year it would be indeed a day of firsts.

When being diagnosed with a cancer these special events are really special, and I'm really grateful for the daily chemotherapy I take which has allowed me to be a grandfather.

Every penny we raise goes into specialist research into all blood cancers which charity fund to the tune of £23,000000

Message from Loz Harrison:

I wish to thank all my family and friends  who were involved in the above, both riders and helpers who made the sponsored bike ride a huge success.

I would particularly like to thank Debbie and Terry Hickmott for there help for assisting with arranging the sponsored bike ride in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

In 2010 Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research celebrated there 50th Anniversary, I therefore, decided to arrange the first sponsored bike ride to raise awareness and much needed funding. 89 riders which included several children cycled 50km across the North Wales Coast and back and raised a fantastic £14,410.

Due to the success of the above and the request from all who was involved in the first sponsored bike ride we contacted Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research head office and requested that we have a recognised annual bikeathon again to raise awareness and much needed funding.

After much deliberation it was decided that we would name our sponsored bike ride North Wales Coast Bikeathon, which was to be held 2nd July, 2011 and shall be held annually on the cycle route from Prestatyn to Abergele and back.

As this was the first official sponsored bike ride held we had to submit formal paperwork the Denbighshire and Conway Local Authority for holding an event on the promenade in line with there procedure. I wish to thank the officers involved for there assistance in the arrangements.

The week before the bike ride was to take place it was discovered the planned sea defence work was being undertaken on Rhyl promenade opposite where the fair use to be which the area cycle route had been fenced for safety. We had a site meeting with the construction company Galiford Try to discuss our pre-arrange sponsored bike ride which I advised closing the stretch of cycle route had a detrimental affect on how the bike ride was to be managed safely.

As a token of good will Galiford Try moved the 300m of herras fencing away from the cycle route at great expense both financially and to their program. I wish to thank the site team for there assistance as it was greatly appreciated.

The morning of July 2nd, 2011 150 riders gathered at the West car park at the side of Prestatyn Nova Centre to start riding to Abergele train station and back for the first North Wales Coast Bikeathon. All riders successfully made there and back with only a couple of mino r incidents with assistance of St Johns Ambulance who dealt with the incidents impeccably.

After the bike ride we headed to Flint Golf Club for our after show party. I would particularly like to thank Ian Reid for the use of his facilities for the second year running. I would also, like to thank Shamy and friends for setting up the marquee and disco, and John Carney for entertaining on the night.

For a successful event to take place you need the help of friends and family. I would therefore, like to thank the bike doctors, marshals, and backup van that made the event such a success.

Finally, I very proud to say we have raised a fantastic £13,310.48 for a worthy Charity who does much need research to discover a way to treat/eradicate Leukaemia and Lymphoma the most common causes of blood cancer.

To all who were involved in the sponsored bike ride and anyone else who is interested in participating I wish to advise the second North Wales Coast Bikeathon is to be held on 7th July, 2012
